The Ø button on a microphone channel of the RØDECaster Pro II and RØDECaster Duo is the Phase (Polarity Invert) control. When enabled, it reverses the polarity of the audio signal by 180 degrees.
In simple terms, this flips the audio waveform upside down by swapping its positive and negative halves. While this usually doesn't affect a single microphone on its own, it can make a significant difference when using multiple microphones on the same sound source.
When Should You Use the Phase Button?
Phase inversion is primarily used to correct phase cancellation between two or more microphones recording the same sound source.
For example, if you're recording a drum kit, piano or guitar amplifier with multiple microphones, small differences in microphone placement can cause the sound waves to arrive at each microphone at slightly different times. This can result in:
- Reduced bass response.
- Thin or hollow-sounding audio.
- Certain frequencies becoming quieter or cancelling out completely.
Enabling the Ø button on one microphone channel may improve the overall sound by bringing the microphones back into phase.
