The RØDECaster Pro II and RØDECaster Duo are a versatile audio production tools widely recognized for its exceptional features. Among their notable capabilities is the ability of its USB1 port to function both as a peripheral device and a host controller for USB storage devices. While this aligns with USB specifications, it is a rarity in the realm of USB implementations.
When the RØDECaster Pro II or RØDECaster Duo are connected to a computer via its USB1 port, a USB negotiation process ensues to establish connection. During this negotiation, the RØDECaster Pro II or RØDECaster Duo may provide 5V power output to external devices, serving the purpose of powering them if needed. It's important to note that this behaviour adheres to the USB standards. However, certain computers may encounter challenges in properly handling this negotiation, resulting in confusion and unexpected consequences.
It appears that some USB controller manufacturers have overlooked the support for this specific behaviour. Consequently, when a connected device presents any voltage, the computer assumes it to be a power supply. This can lead to a range of effects, including failed booting or shutdown of PCs or Macs, and the persistence of active components drawing power from the 5V output. Interestingly, these issues may vary across USB ports, as different ports on a computer can be connected to distinct USB controllers.
Thankfully, there is potential workaround to address the challenges posed by this uncommon USB behaviour:
- Connect a USB hub between the computer and RØDECaster Pro II or RØDECaster Duo.
By connecting the RØDECaster Pro II or RØDECaster Duo to a USB hub and subsequently plugging the hub into the computer, the voltage emitted by the RØDECaster Pro II can be shielded from the computer's detection. This simple solution helps prevent any issues arising from the USB negotiation process.
