Getting comfortable with your chosen DAW is an important step toward achieving a good audio recording every time. Although all DAWs share some similarities, each has its own unique features that might slow you down, especially if you're new to the software. In this guide, we'll walk you through how to record with your RØDE USB microphone or interface in FL Studio.
The first step would be to connect your chosen RØDE USB device, and select this within FL Studio.
Setting up your Audio Device
- Select "Options" from the Toolbar at the top of the screen, then choose "Audio Settings."
- When the window appears on your screen, locate the Device dropdown menu. Click on this dropdown box to reveal a list of available audio devices connected to your system. From this list, select your preferred RØDE USB Audio device. This ensures that the audio input and/or output will be routed through the chosen RØDE device.
- Below the device dropdown box, click on "Show ASIO Panel" to adjust the sample rate and buffer length. For RØDE USB audio products, 48,000Hz or 48kHz is the recommended setting. The buffer length controls the amount of digital latency between your microphone and computer. This also depends on your computer's processing power. A lower value requires more from your system but leads to less latency, while a higher value is easier on it, while introducing more latency.
Recording Audio
Once the RØDE USB audio device has been connected and configured correctly, the next step is to create an audio track. You can either create a stereo (dual channel) or mono (single channel) audio track, depending on the device that you have connected. Once the audio track has been created, you'll need to assign the track's input to your RØDE USB device.
- To access the mixer window, start by navigating to the View menu located at the top of your screen. Once you have opened the View menu, look for the option labelled "Mixer" and click on it. Alternatively, for a faster method, you can simply press the F9 key on your keyboard, which serves as a shortcut to instantly open the mixer window without having to go through the menu options.
- Within the Mixer section, locate the track you intend to use. Once you have selected the track, proceed to the top-right corner of the Mixer interface. There, you will find a drop-down menu that allows you to select the input channel. Click on this drop-down menu and choose the appropriate input channel for your recording source.
- Next, press the Record button. Upon pressing it, a window will pop up prompting you to make a choice regarding where you want the audio to be recorded. You will be given two options: either to record the audio into Edison, which is the dedicated audio editor and recorder within the software, or to record the audio directly into the playlist as an audio clip. Select the option that best suits your workflow and proceed with your recording.
