If your Mac's System Information shows your USB audio device is connected, but it doesn't appear in your Sound settings, your audio preferences might be corrupted. Don't worry, this is usually easy to fix by resetting your Mac's audio configuration files.
Follow these steps carefully.
Step 1: Delete System Audio Preferences
First, we'll remove the main system-level audio configuration files.
- Open Finder.
- Click on Go in the top menu bar, then select Computer.
- Navigate to Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > Audio.
- Delete the following two files from this folder:
com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plistcom.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist
Step 2: Delete User Audio Preferences
Next, we need to remove the user-specific audio preference file. This one is in a hidden folder.
- Open Finder.
- Click on Go in the top menu bar, and this time, press and hold the 'Option ⌥' key on your keyboard.
- A Library option will appear in the menu. Click on it.
- From the Library folder, navigate to the Preferences folder.
- Find and delete the following file:
com.apple.audio.AudioMIDISetup.plist
Note: This file may not exist on all systems. If you can't find it, don't worry—just proceed to the final step.
Step 3: Empty Trash and Restart 💻
To complete the process and force macOS to create fresh, uncorrupted preference files, you must complete these final actions.
- Right-click on the Trash icon in your Dock and select Empty Trash.
- Restart your Mac.
Once your Mac has rebooted, reconnect your USB audio device. It should now be recognised correctly.
