Choosing the correct cable is essential for your microphone to operate correctly. While an XLR to quarter inch (1/4") cable may fit the connectors, it is not suitable for most microphones because it cannot provide the power required by the microphone.
Why an XLR to 1/4" Cable Does Not Work
Different microphones have different power requirements, and these are supplied through an XLR connection.
- Most condenser microphones require 48 V phantom power.
- Microphones that require plug in power also rely on a compatible powered input.
A standard quarter inch microphone input does not supply this power, which means the microphone may produce no audio or may not function correctly.
Recommended Connection
To ensure proper operation, connect your microphone using a standard XLR to XLR cable to an audio interface, mixer or recorder that provides the appropriate microphone input and power.
